THC gets all the press, but CBD quietly outsells expectations at both of our Toronto counters. It’s the cannabinoid for people who want something from cannabis other than a high: a calmer evening, a post-gym balm, a nightcap that isn’t alcohol. This guide covers what CBD actually is and how to buy it sensibly in Ontario.
What CBD is
CBD stands for cannabidiol, one of more than 100 cannabinoids the cannabis plant produces. Two things define it. It’s non-intoxicating, so it won’t impair you the way THC does, and the World Health Organization has reported it carries no potential for dependence. Legal CBD products in Canada are extracted from licensed cannabis or hemp, diluted into carrier oils, capsules, drinks, or topicals, and sold with the CBD content printed on the label in milligrams.
One thing CBD is not: a medicine you can buy at a dispensary. Health Canada has approved specific pharmaceutical preparations of cannabinoids for specific conditions, and those go through doctors, not retail shelves. Anyone selling retail CBD as a cure is overselling it. What we can tell you is what customers consistently report, and why they come back for it.
Why people buy it
The patterns we see at the counter, year after year:
- Evening wind-down. Oils and soft gels taken an hour before bed are the single most rebought CBD format we carry.
- Taking the edge off THC. CBD softens the THC experience, which is why balanced 1:1 products are the standard recommendation for anyone who finds THC unpredictable. Our CBD vs THC explainer goes deeper on this.
- Topicals. Balms and creams applied to shoulders, knees, and lower backs. No high, no impairment, just a localized application. Gym people and gardeners buy these in bulk.
- Daytime calm. Low-dose CBD drinks and mints for people who want a settled feeling while staying completely functional.
How to dose it
CBD is forgiving compared to THC, but more is not automatically better. A common starting point is 10 to 20 mg, taken consistently rather than occasionally. Oils under the tongue act within about 30 to 45 minutes; capsules and edibles take longer. Some people notice effects the first night, others only after a week of regular use. Side effects are uncommon and mild, usually drowsiness or appetite changes at high doses.
If you take prescription medication, mention CBD to your pharmacist. It can interact with some drugs, and that conversation takes two minutes.
Buying CBD in Toronto
Every CBD product at a licensed Ontario dispensary comes from a federally licensed producer, with tested, labelled cannabinoid content. The grey-market gas station gummies do not offer that guarantee, and with CBD, knowing your actual dose is the whole point.
We stock CBD oils, capsules, topicals, drinks, and CBD-dominant flower at both locations. Come by High Park on Bloor West or King West on Portland Street and tell the budtender what you’re hoping to get out of it. That one sentence usually narrows the shelf to two or three options. 19+ only.
