CBD vs THC: What's the Difference and Which Should You Buy?

THC gets you high. CBD doesn't. That's the short version, but it's not the useful one. A plain-English guide from our Toronto budtenders.

The question we hear most at the counter, by a wide margin: “what’s actually the difference between THC and CBD?” The short answer is that THC is the part that gets you high and CBD isn’t. The useful answer takes a few more paragraphs, because the two work better as a pair than most people expect.

What THC does

THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, which nobody says out loud) binds directly to CB1 receptors in your brain. That direct connection is the high: euphoria, a shifted sense of time, the sudden conviction that you need snacks. It’s also why dose matters so much. At 2.5 mg you might just feel pleasantly loose. At 25 mg you might spend the evening negotiating with your own couch.

You’ll find THC in basically everything on a dispensary menu: dried flower, pre-rolls, vape carts, edibles, concentrates. In Ontario, the label always lists THC content, so you never have to guess.

What CBD does

CBD (cannabidiol) doesn’t bind to those receptors the same way, so it won’t get you high no matter how much you take. People reach for it when they want to feel settled without feeling altered. It comes as oils, capsules, topicals, CBD-dominant flower, and drinks.

One thing worth knowing: CBD can actually take the edge off THC. If you’ve ever had a session go sideways, a balanced product would have been your friend.

Does the ratio matter?

More than the raw numbers do. A 1:1 product (equal THC and CBD) feels noticeably softer than the same amount of THC alone. That’s why we usually point newer customers toward balanced tinctures and drinks first. If you’re brand new, our New to Cannabis guide covers dosing in more detail.

A rough cheat sheet:

  • Want the classic high? THC-dominant.
  • Want to stay clear-headed? CBD-dominant.
  • Not sure, or had a bad edible experience once? Start 1:1, start small.
